Trip Report

January 16...a week late due to weather but 3 intrepid hikers set off...2 were new to this area... so after early 7am start we were ready for the trip about 9.45am...leaving from Sisters car park.

A good steady two hours trek saw us at Gabriels hut and from there we did a quick diversion to Lake Sumner...very calm on this particular day...from there it was onto Jolliebrook hut with about 300m height gain and very pleasant forest...the down hill section following the most lovely brook that grew into a pretty impressive stream.

the Jolliebrook hut is quite unique as you have a swingbridge entry to it and from there on about 30 river crossing to get back on the circuit to the Hurunui...having slipped over several times in the river when I went there myself we were happy to retreat the way we had come...a long trip about 28kms solid tramping but well worthwhile according to my colleagues...great day weatherwise better that Christchurch's 8 degree day
