8 June 1997: Mt Gargarus

Map K34

I arrived at the Mobil station by Spagalimi's just as they were leaving at 8:30am. The drive to Mt Gargarus took about two hours. We arrived at the start of the four wheel drive track which goes up to Gargarus Saddle and got ourselves geared up for the trip to the top of Mt Gargarus. We carried our ice axes in case there was snow or ice on the top, but there was none, just rock.

We started walking at about 10:40am and headed up the four wheel drive track. It was a good warm up before heading up Mt Gargarus which had a bit of a steep climb to it. We got to the top at about 1'o'clock where we had a good view of Lake Coleridge and of the Craigieburn Range. There was quite a cool breeze on the top, hence we did not linger long enough to eat our lunches. We left the top at about 2'o'clock and wandered along to a shingle slide which brought us down to Lake Lillian. The shingle slide was good fun even though my boots were full of stones and my heels blistered! After a quick rest at the bottom we headed back over Gargarus Saddle to the vehicles, where we arrived at about 5 o'clock.

There were 21 trampers in the party.
