Christchurch
Tramping Club

The Christchurch Tramping Club, or CTC for short, is one of Christchurch's largest and most active tramping clubs. We have around 300 members, and welcome everyone, whatever your background or ability.

Tramping Trips

We run a range of day and overnight tramping trips most weekends, as well as longer trips from time to time. Trips range from easy (minimal experience required) to hard (high level of fitness and experience required) - see the Trip Grades page for more information. We strongly recommend new members start with an Easy or Easy/Mod trip to get a feel for the club grades!

Day trips are generally to places like the Port Hills, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury Foothills, the Craigeburns and Arthur's Pass. Overnight trips could be to these locations, or further afield such as the West Coast and Mt Cook. Check out the Trip Reports page to read about some of our recent trips. The only cost for club trips for members is paying your share of the transport costs and any hut fees. Non-members pay a $5/day trip fee.

Social Meetings

Club social meetings are held every other Wednesday at 7.30pm. Check the Trips & Socials page to see when upcoming meetings are and what's on. The meetings usually involve reports on recent trips, a tramping related talk or other activity, as well as time for socialising and tea drinking. Non members are always welcome to come to our social meetings - you're welcome to just turn up, or get in touch with the New Members rep first (contact details here) .

Meetings are normally held at the Canterbury Mineral And Lapidary Club Waltham Road, 110 Waltham Road, Christchurch 8023

Training

The club regularly runs training and instruction courses aimed at increasing the range of tramping trips people can do. They concentrate on the skills necessary for safe and enjoyable tramping. Our courses include:

  • Bushcraft
  • River crossing techniques
  • Basic, intermediate and advanced snow skills courses
  • Navigation

All of our courses are strictly for full paid-up members only.

Brian Dougan Youth Programme

The Christchurch Tramping Club’s Youth Programme aims to introduce high-school students over 15 years of age to tramping. The club has partnered with schools to offer this opportunity. Experienced club members lead easy tramps to bookable huts for up to eight students with an adult to student ratio of one to four.

The programme is entirely volunteer-led and has the goal of providing students with an enjoyable introduction to the outdoors. The programme is free of charge as we have a grant from the Rata Foundation. We also have specialised clothing (e.g. waterproof coats) and equipment (e.g. packs and sleeping bags) to loan to students at no cost.
